Who can apply
Open to citizens of any country that maintains diplomatic relations with Japan; Uzbekistan has held diplomatic relations with Japan since January 26, 1992, and is fully eligible. Candidates must hold a PhD (typically obtained within the last 6 years) and must arrange a host researcher at a Japanese institution before applying.
How to apply
- First secure a host researcher at a Japanese university or research institute and agree on a research plan
- The host researcher then submits your application to JSPS through the Electronic Application System.

Two application rounds per year: the first closes in late August (e.g., August 29, 2025) and the second in late April (e.g., April 28, 2026). Applications are submitted via the host researcher directly to JSPS Tokyo.

- Include an element of international collaboration — this is an advantage for many grants.
