European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Theoretical Physics Department
Fellows receive CHF 7,039–7,994 per month, net of tax (depending on qualifications). Additional benefits include CERN's health insurance scheme, CERN Pension Fund membership, an installation grant, family and child allowances, and travel costs to and from Geneva.
This programme is specifically reserved for candidates who are NOT nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State — since Uzbekistan is not a CERN member state, Uzbekistan citizens are fully eligible under this exact criterion. Candidates must hold (or be about to defend) a PhD in theoretical physics, with no more than 10 years of research experience since the degree giving access to doctoral studies.
Applications are submitted via CERN's official careers portal (careers.cern) and the Theoretical Physics Department page (theory.cern/jobs): a CV, statement of research interests, and 3 letters of recommendation are required.
Annual
For fellowships starting in 2026, the application deadline is 3 November at 23:59 CET. The programme recurs annually around the same period, with successful candidates' contracts typically starting in autumn (October).
TWAS + UNESCO
TWAS covers travel costs to the host centre of excellence and provides a monthly allowance of USD 300 for local living expenses; the host centre covers accommodation, meals and research infrastructure. Associateship status is granted for a 3-year term, during which the associate may visit the centre twice (2-3 months each visit); the term may be renewed for a further 3-year period if funds permit.
OeAD — Austria's Agency for Education and Internationalisation
The grant provides a stipend of EUR 1,300 per month during the research stay in Austria, plus assistance with accommodation and health insurance. Grant duration ranges from 1 to 9 months and cannot be extended.
European Commission
The total budget of a consortium project can range from several hundred thousand to several million euros. Under the Widening Participation instruments (Teaming, Twinning, ERA Chairs), a partner organisation may receive over €100,000; the exact amount depends on the terms of the specific call.
