Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
Provides a monthly stipend of JPY 362,000, a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance, round-trip airfare, and overseas travel insurance.
Open to citizens of any country that maintains diplomatic relations with Japan; Uzbekistan has held diplomatic relations with Japan since January 26, 1992, and is fully eligible. Candidates must hold a PhD (typically obtained within the last 6 years) and must arrange a host researcher at a Japanese institution before applying.
First secure a host researcher at a Japanese university or research institute and agree on a research plan. The host researcher then submits your application to JSPS through the Electronic Application System.
Periodic
Two application rounds per year: the first closes in late August (e.g., August 29, 2025) and the second in late April (e.g., April 28, 2026). Applications are submitted via the host researcher directly to JSPS Tokyo.
TWAS + UNESCO
TWAS covers travel costs to the host centre of excellence and provides a monthly allowance of USD 300 for local living expenses; the host centre covers accommodation, meals and research infrastructure. Associateship status is granted for a 3-year term, during which the associate may visit the centre twice (2-3 months each visit); the term may be renewed for a further 3-year period if funds permit.
