Which requirements apply to me?
A few questions, and you see only the figures that apply to you. We do not show the others, because conflating them is what does the most damage.
For admission or for defence — four different sets of figures get conflated in public.
Before you start
- There is no single national deadline for submitting documents. Each institution sets its own.
- Admission requirements and defence requirements are entirely different figures. Mixing them up is the most common mistake.
Four routes — which one is yours?
One table: the degree each route awards, how you are assessed, the publications you need to apply, the quota, the stipend, and whether the time counts towards your employment record.

How many candidates may one supervisor take?
- Doctor of Science: 4, or 6 under the extended limit
- Doctor of Philosophy holding the rank of dotsent or professor: 2, or 3 under the extended limit
The higher figure is not automatic: it requires that the supervisor's candidates defended on time over the last three years, on a collegial-body conclusion.
These caps are often cited as «VMQ-545, appendix 3, band 7» — that reference points at the wrong instrument. They are in band 8 of the VMQ 304 Regulation.
The universal rules
- The admission conditions are enumerated in full in bands 16 and 19 — they contain no age limit.VMQ 304 · clause 16, 19
- Those who have already completed post-graduate education are not re-admitted to tayanch doktorantura or doktorantura.VMQ 304 · clause 37
- Holders of the State Scholarship are admitted to tayanch doktorantura without entrance examinations.VMQ 304 · clause 24
