How do you turn PDF pages into images?
Every page becomes a separate JPG or PNG file, and they all arrive in one ZIP archive. You choose the quality level, and a higher level gives a larger size. The tool does not lift out the pictures embedded inside a page — it draws the whole page, text and all, as a single image.
What exporting to images does not do
- It does not extract individual pictures — the whole page becomes an image.
- It does not keep the text: it turns into pixels.
- It does not deliver one page on its own — extract the page you want first.
Worked example: 10 pages, 10 images
A 10-page document was exported to JPG at the medium quality level and one archive held 10 images. The names run from 01 to 10 with a leading zero, so a file manager sorts them in page order. A 3-page document exported to PNG at high quality produced 3 files — exactly one image per page.
Getting a page image for slides and posters
Preparing a conference talk or a defence presentation often calls for a table or a chart from a paper that is already published. A screenshot comes out poor, and redrawing it risks diverging from the published result — which is precisely where a reviewer will ask a question. Exporting the whole page as an image preserves the original appearance and is good enough for a slide. The high quality level suits a poster and the medium level a slide shown on screen. Do not forget the source: an image taken from a published work is subject to citation rules and needs a reference under it.
Questions about exporting PDFs to images
Which is better, JPG or PNG?
For scans and colour pages JPG comes out smaller. For crisp line art, drawings and tables PNG is better, because it does not distort lines when compressing. Both give the same page image; only the compression differs.
What does the quality level affect?
It sets how many pixels the page is drawn at. A higher level captures more detail but produces a larger file and takes longer. Medium is usually enough for viewing on screen; choose high for printing.
What if I only need one page?
Lift that page out into its own file with the Extract pages tool first, then convert it to an image. The archive will then hold a single image and no surplus pages get processed.
Can the text in the result be searched?
No. A page exported to an image keeps no text layer. If you need the text, pull it from the original document with the Extract text from PDF tool.
