How do you bring PDF pages to a single size?
Every page is brought to the format you choose — A4, A3, A5 or Letter. Page content is scaled up or down by the same factor in both directions, so images and tables are never stretched. The tool does not crop the edges: content is fitted into the new page in full, leaving blank margin where it is needed.
What resizing does not do
- It does not crop the edges or lose content.
- It does not change orientation — a landscape page stays landscape.
- It does not add extra margin for printing.
Worked example: landscape and portrait pages
A landscape page of 600 by 300 points was fitted to A4 and became 842 by 595 points, so it stayed landscape. A portrait page of 300 by 400 points became 595 by 842 points. In both cases the content was scaled by the same factor in both directions, so the proportions of tables and images did not change.
Preparing a document assembled from many sources for print
One piece of research is usually assembled from several sources: the main text exported from Word, charts prepared in a foreign program, scanned certificates, and appendices that arrived from another institution. Their formats differ — A4 and Letter get mixed most often — and on screen the difference is barely visible. In print it shows at once: the text block shifts, bound leaves stick out past the cover, and the sewn edge runs unevenly. In the copy that goes to a print shop or to a council every page must share one format. Because orientation is preserved, landscape tables in appendices are not forced upright and stay easy to read.
Questions about page size
Will part of the content be cropped?
No. Content is scaled by an equal factor so that it fits the new page in full. If the page proportions differ from the new format, blank margin remains at the edge — which is safer than cropping, because nothing is lost.
Do landscape pages become portrait?
No. Orientation is preserved: a landscape page is fitted to landscape A4 and a portrait page to portrait A4. That keeps wide appendix tables readable.
What size is A4?
A4 is 595 by 842 points, that is 210 by 297 millimetres. In landscape the two values swap. The tool uses exactly those figures, so the result matches the print-shop standard.
Does quality drop?
The page is not redrawn, only scaled, so text stays searchable. Enlarging a scanned page makes its pixels larger — that is the limit of the scan resolution, not of the tool.
