How do you rotate PDF pages?
Pages turn by 90 degrees and multiples of it, either across the whole document or only on the pages you select. The rotation is added to the current angle. The tool does not straighten a skewed scan: a leaf that came out a few degrees off needs a different operation, one that redraws the page image.
What rotating does not do
- It does not straighten a scan that is a few degrees off.
- It does not crop margins or change the page size.
- It does not redraw the image, so nothing loses quality.
Worked example: a page that was already turned
The single page of the test file was already rotated by 90 degrees. Adding another 90 brought it to 180; giving the same source file 270 instead returned the rotation to 0, so the page sat upright. In a 10-page document with pages "2, 4" selected, those two pages turned and the other eight were left untouched.
Working with landscape tables in appendices
Appendices nearly always contain landscape material: a wide statistical table, a budget estimate, a large sheet of experimental results. Because they are scanned separately they often land on their side and stand out from the rest of the document. A reviewer or council member then has to turn the page by hand on screen, and in print it sits awkwardly in the binding. Rotating changes only the orientation flag of the page — the image is not redrawn, so small figures in a table do not blur. A mix of portrait and landscape pages in one document is normal: each page keeps its own orientation, and the Page size tool preserves that too.
Questions about rotating pages
Is the angle added or set absolutely?
It is added. A page already at 90 degrees given another 90 ends up at 180. To bring a page upright, supply the missing angle: for a page at 90 degrees that is 270.
Can I rotate just one page?
Yes. Write the numbers the same way as in the extract and delete tools: 2, 4 or 5-9. Leave the page field empty and the rotation applies to every page.
Why does the page still look sideways in another program?
Rotation is recorded as an orientation flag inside the PDF, and almost every modern viewer reads it correctly. A very old program or print driver may ignore it — in that case, exporting through PDF to images and rebuilding the document helps.
Does quality drop?
No. The page content is not redrawn, only the orientation flag changes. Text stays searchable and images keep their original quality.
