How do you add page numbers to a PDF?
A number is drawn on every page, and you choose the position, size, format and starting figure. The labels are drawn with a Unicode font, so Uzbek and Cyrillic letters come out correctly. The tool does not find or remove numbers already printed in the document: if an old number stays, the page will show two figures.
What numbering does not do
- It does not find or remove existing numbers on the pages.
- It cannot number only selected pages — the number goes on all of them.
- It increases the file size, because a full font is embedded in the document.
Worked example: 10 pages and a Cyrillic format
A 10-page document was numbered with a format of the "1 / 10" shape, and a number was drawn on all 10 pages. The same tool was tested with the Russian word for page, and the Cyrillic came out without errors. In a 3-page file with a starting figure of 5, the pages were numbered 5, 6 and 7. Embedding the font grew the file by roughly 230 KB.
Numbering a dissertation assembled from parts
When chapters are written as separate files each has its own numbering, and after merging the document runs from 1 to 40 and then from 1 to 35 again. The copy for the academic council needs continuous numbering, otherwise the contents page and the cross-references in the text stop matching. A second typical case: the title page and the approval sheet count towards the total but carry no printed number — there it is enough to separate the title page and number the rest starting from 3. A third is appendices, which are often numbered on their own, so it is easier to number the appendix block as a separate file and attach it to the main text afterwards.
Questions about page numbers
Can the title page be left unnumbered?
Not directly: the number goes on every page. The practical answer is to lift the title page out with the Extract pages tool, number the rest from the starting figure you want, and then merge the two files back together.
Why did the file grow?
Drawing the number embeds a full Unicode font in the document — in testing that added roughly 230 KB. Subsetting the font does not currently work in the library in use, so the cost is stated plainly. On a large scan it is negligible; on a small file it is noticeable.
Do Cyrillic and Uzbek letters work?
Yes. The labels are drawn with a Unicode font that fully covers the Cyrillic alphabet and the special marks of the Uzbek Latin script. A character the font does not carry is not drawn, and a warning is shown for it.
Where can the number go?
You pick one of nine positions: top or bottom edge, on the left, in the centre or on the right. The number is drawn at a fixed inset from the edge, so it looks even across pages of different sizes.
