How do you add a watermark to a PDF?
A text watermark is drawn on every page, and you choose the wording, position, opacity, size and whether it runs diagonally. The label is drawn with a Unicode font, so Cyrillic and Uzbek letters come out correctly. This is not a protection measure: a watermark is text laid over the page, and anyone with a PDF editor can take it off.
What a watermark does not do
- It does not protect the document — the mark can be removed.
- It places no image or logo, only text.
- It cannot be applied to selected pages — the mark lands on all of them.
Worked example: marking a 3-page draft
The Uzbek word for draft was placed diagonally in the centre of a 3-page document at low opacity. The tool marked all three pages — none was skipped. Drawing the label embedded a full Unicode font in the document, which grew the file by roughly 230 KB. Characters outside the font coverage, an emoji for instance, are not drawn, and a warning is shown for them.
Telling apart the copies that circulate before a defence
Before a defence a dissertation passes through many hands: the supervisor, the department discussion, reviewers, sometimes colleagues at another institution. The text changes at each stage, and a few months later it is genuinely hard to tell which file is which revision. The dangerous outcome is a rough version handed out for discussion being used in place of the final one. With the word for draft or a discussion date on every page that confusion becomes visible: such a page cannot be printed by accident and carried into a council meeting. The final copy carries no watermark, so keep the clean file separately and mark only the copy you hand out.
Questions about watermarks
Can a watermark be removed?
Yes, it can — and saying so plainly is the honest answer. A watermark is a layer of text over the page, and a PDF editor can strip it. This tool is not a barrier to copying; it marks the status of a document.
Will the label cover the text?
Opacity is adjustable: at a low value the label becomes a background and the text reads freely. The diagonal setting places the label at an angle to the lines, so it is noticeable without getting in the way of reading.
Can I write in Cyrillic or Uzbek?
Yes. A Unicode font is embedded in the document, covering the Cyrillic alphabet and the special marks of the Uzbek Latin script. A character the font does not carry is not drawn, and the result page reports it.
Can I use a logo?
Not at present — the tool draws text only. If you need a graphical mark, it is easier to add it in the program where the source document is prepared.
