How do you reorder the pages of a PDF?
Write the new page sequence as numbers and the document is rebuilt in that order. Every page must appear in the list exactly once. If a page is missing or listed twice, the tool refuses and returns an error: silently losing a leaf would not be a reorder, it would be data loss.
What reordering does not do
- It neither deletes nor duplicates pages — an incomplete list is rejected.
- It does not rotate pages or change their size.
- It does not work the correct order out for you — you supply the sequence.
Worked example: rearranging a 3-page document
A 3-page document was given the sequence 3, 1, 2, and the result was again 3 pages with the former last page now first. An incomplete list was then supplied on purpose — only two of the three pages. Rather than producing a 2-page file, the tool stopped and reported that the sequence has to cover every page.
Restoring order after duplex scanning
Most department scanners feed one side at a time. A double-sided document is captured by scanning all the odd pages, then flipping the stack and scanning all the even ones — which yields a file ordered 1, 3, 5 … 2, 4, 6, and it can travel to a council or a journal in exactly that state. A second common case: the title page of an avtoreferat, the abstract and the supervisor review were scanned separately and now sit in the wrong places. Writing the sequence out as numbers is faster than rescanning, because page quality is not affected. And the requirement that every page appear exactly once is what stops a leaf from going missing.
Questions about page order
Can I list only a few pages?
No, the list has to cover every page. That is deliberate: with a partial list the pages you left out would vanish silently. If you only want part of the document, use the Extract pages tool instead.
What if I list a page twice?
The tool will not run. A repeated number means some other page dropped out of the list, so a leaf would be lost in the result. That is why such a sequence comes back as an error rather than as a file.
Does page quality change?
No. Pages are not redrawn, only their position inside the document changes. Text stays searchable, and images and tables keep their quality.
How do I fix an odd-then-even scan?
If the document holds all the odd pages first and all the even ones after, the new sequence alternates the first page with the page from the middle of the list. For a short document, writing it out by hand is the quickest route.
