When does this apply?

For documenting the distributional shape of a continuous or ordinal variable: per variable, the Shapiro–Wilk test, skewness, kurtosis, a Q–Q plot and a histogram. This is diagnostic only: the result does not select another analysis and must not — which test to apply is the researcher’s decision. That is why the Shapiro–Wilk p is not promoted to the analysis’s own p.
