Converting a Word document

Do not retype the text by hand — upload the .docx file, the text is converted and the document still looks the same.

Most converters pull only the text out of a Word document, which is why headings, tables and the reference list fall apart. Here the document's internal structure is kept: only the text part is converted and everything else is copied across untouched.

What gets converted

Every readable part of the document is converted — including the ones that are easy to forget.

  • Body text and headings
  • Text inside tables
  • Headers and footers
  • Footnotes and endnotes
  • Comments left in the document
  • The title and keywords in the document properties

What stays exactly as it was

The following is copied byte for byte — the converter does not touch it at all, so the document opens in Word just as before.

  • Fonts, sizes and all formatting
  • Table borders and cell widths
  • Images, charts and drawings
  • Page size and margins
  • Styles and the table-of-contents structure
  • Mendeley or Zotero's internal data

The file is never sent to a server

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your document is not uploaded to our server or anywhere else — which matters if you are working with an unpublished dissertation or an internal document.

Limits — worth knowing up front

Only .docx and .txt
The older .doc format is not supported. Save it as .docx in Word first via «Save As». .pdf, .pptx and .xlsx are not converted — only .docx and .txt.
15 MB maximum
That is enough for an ordinary dissertation or abstract. If your document is larger, compress the images or split it by chapter.
A password-protected file will not open
Remove the password in Word and upload it again.
List numbering written out as words
Word labels in automatic lists (for example «Birinchi bob») are not converted — they are part of the document's style, and touching them can break other things.
