How do you pull selected pages out of a PDF?
Type the page numbers you need — for example 1-3, 8, 12-20 — and get a new PDF containing only those pages. The words for all, even and odd are accepted too. Pages come out in document order: however you write the numbers, the result is ascending, which means this tool cannot be used to rearrange pages.
What extracting does not do
- It does not rearrange pages — the result is always in document order.
- It does not produce several separate files — everything lands in one document.
- It removes nothing from the original file.
Worked example: 4 pages out of 10
A 10-page document was given the expression "1-3, 7". The result was a single PDF of 4 pages, and reading the finished file back also gave 4: the first three came from the range and the fourth from the separately listed page seven. Given the word for even, the same document yielded 5 pages; given the word for odd, it yielded 5 as well.
Building an appendix that proves a publication
For an attestation file, a department portfolio or OAK paperwork the paper alone is not enough: the cover, the contents page and the page carrying the imprint are needed too, because those are what confirm the journal name, the year and the ISSN. Sending the whole volume is awkward — it often runs to hundreds of pages and tens of megabytes. List the pages you need and the cover, the contents and your own paper land in one compact document. For a secretary or an expert that is the easiest form to check: one file holding both the evidence and the text. The same technique is used when compiling the publication list for an avtoreferat.
Questions about extracting pages
If I write "7, 1", will the pages come out in that order?
No. Page one comes first and page seven second: extraction always preserves document order. To swap pages around, extract the ones you need first and then pass the result to the Reorder pages tool.
What happens if I name a page that does not exist?
Numbers outside the document are simply ignored. If the expression yields no real page at all, the tool returns an error rather than creating an empty document.
Can I get each range as a separate file?
The range mode of the Split PDF tool does that: it turns every comma-separated chunk into its own document and delivers them in an archive. Extraction always returns a single file.
Does extracting reduce quality?
No. Page objects are copied as they are: images are not recompressed and text is not redrawn. Text in the extracted document therefore remains as searchable and copyable as it was in the original.
