How do you delete unwanted pages from a PDF?

List the pages to remove — the rest keep their order and form a new PDF. The words for all, even and odd work here too. The tool leaves alone any page numbers printed on the pages themselves: delete page three and the numbers drawn on the pages after it stay unchanged, because they are part of the page content.

What deleting does not do

  • It does not renumber page numbers printed on the pages.
  • It refuses to delete every page — no empty document is created.
  • It does not alter the original file on your computer.

Worked example: two pages off a ten-page file

Pages "2, 5" were removed from a 10-page document, leaving 8 pages — and reading the finished file back also gave 8. Given the word for even, the same document lost all its even pages and 5 remained. When every page was listed, the tool did not carry the job out: instead of producing an empty document it returned an error.

Cleaning a document before sending it to a journal

A scanned dissertation or report nearly always carries surplus leaves: blank versos left by duplex scanning, a sheet accidentally pulled through twice, the first calibration page. On top of that come internal-only documents — the plagiarism check report, an internal review, the minutes of the department discussion. You need those, but they must not be in the file that goes to a journal editor: a reviewer could see an internal assessment that was never meant for them. Removing the pages in advance also cuts down on correspondence with the editorial office. Once cleaned, run the document through the Page numbers tool — only then will the new numbering match the pages that remain.

Questions about deleting pages

Can a deleted page be recovered?

The result is a new file, so your original document stays where it is and you can start again from it. The deleted page is genuinely gone from the downloaded file, though, so keep the original.

What happens if I delete every page?

The tool will not do it and returns an error instead. Many programs cannot open a PDF with no pages at all, so refusing is more useful than producing one.

Do the numbers drawn on the pages change?

No. A printed number is part of the page content, and removing or recalculating it is a different operation. If you need fresh numbering, run the cleaned file through the Page numbers tool.

Which pages count as even?

Even by position in the document: the second, fourth, sixth and so on. The number printed on the page may differ, because a cover or title page is usually left unnumbered.
